Field Notes

Small observations from walks, trains and long evenings.

Light in late September

The afternoon light gets lower and warmer every week. I started carrying a notebook again instead of reaching for the phone — slower, but I remember more of what I saw.

On the night train

Eleven hours, two cups of tea, one very patient conductor. The best part of overnight trains is waking up somewhere completely different with nothing to do but look out of the window.

Notes on a small garden

Three tomato plants, a stubborn rosemary and a lot of optimism. Lessons so far: water in the morning, ignore the snails, and never plant mint in open soil.
